What is a "vowel" ?

There are 5 vowels in English: A E I O U. But each vowel's pronuciation depends on the letters surrounding it in a word. Take the " a " from "hall" and the "a" from"apple". The pronunciation of"a" changes completely in each word. Thai, on the other hand, is much simpler. There are only tow froms of each vowel: short and long.

What are " short vowels" and " long vowels"

Thai vowels can be split into two groups: " short vowels" and " long vowels" Simply put:

Short vowels = pronounce the vowel quickly ----------------- O/ Oh no ! (when you locked your keys in the car)

Long vowels = pronounce the vowel slowly ------------------- OO/ Ohhhh (when you finally undestand something)

When pronouncing long vowels in Thai, it is especially important to clearly elongate them.

I hope you enjoy study Thai.

The Loy Krathong tradition we know of today has evolved from the royal rituals of the early Rattanakosin period in which several types of lanterns were set afloat in the Chao Phraya River and its waterways.

If the tone is worng, you will not easily unerstood even if everything else is correct.Thai uses five tones. For example. to pronounce a rising tone, your voice starts at a low pitch and goes up (much like asking a question in English). The phonetic transliteration in this text book uses tone marks over the vowels to show the tone for each word. Note that the tone marks used for transliteration are different form those used in Thai script.

Let's speak Thai.

What is a "consonants" ?
Cousnants are all the letters that are not vowels. Take the word " cat" for example. The "c" and "t" of cat are the consonats.

 Unaspirated&aspirated consonats
In Thai, consonats are broken into two groups. "Aspirated" and "unaspirated".
- Unaspirated consonants= No air is blown when pronouncing the consonant (k)(c)(t)(p) 4 letters.
-Aspirated consonats = Air is blown when pronouncing the consonant (kh)(ch)(th)(ph) 4 letters.
NOTE: Try holding a tissue in front of your mouth, and pronounce the word " tore" then the word " store". When pronouncing " store" the tissue should remain still. The "t" of "tore" is considered aspirated, while the "t" of "store" is unaspirated.
UNASPIRATED  (How to read them) k - k%%, c - c%%, t- t%%, p - p%%

ASPIRATED       (How to read them) kh-kh%%, ch-ch%%, th-th%%, ph-ph%%
As is would be impossible to pronounce the consnats alone, we've added " %%" onto the end of each consonat for practice purposes.
When an "h" follows one of the unaspirated consonants, remember that simply means it becomes an "aspirated consonat".
"Unaspirated consonants" tend not to sound as clear and clean as aspirated consonants. Unaspirated consonants are usually pronounced in the throat, and can feel your vocal cords vibrate.
(K) = "g" of agin
(C) = "c" of job
(Kh) = "c" of cane
(Ch) = "ch" of chop
This is how to read consonant. I hope you enjoy with study Thai. And next part i will come back to continue  How to practice prouncing" unasipated" and "aspirated" consonants. ^_^
